Help:Industry Codes
From Yellowikis: Open Business Listings
Industry codes are one of the major ways in which articles are classified in Yellowikis. We use several kinds of codes:
- NAICS codes
- The six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was launched in 1997.
- SIC codes
- The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) was a United States government system for classifying industry by a four-digit code. Established in the 1930s, it is still in use but has largely been replaced in North America by NAICS.
- Google Category Codes
- These industry category codes are used by Google.
- United Nations ISIC codes
- These codes have some advantages over the NAICS system — particularly where the organisation is not-for-profit corporation or a charity.
There are also a number of different commercial code systems in use.
Industry codes are hugely important to the future development of Yellowikis. If you have any comments or suggestions about how best to use them please contact Yellowikis by email (yellowikis@gmail.com) or post a comment at the Community Portal.
Remember: Any standard industry code you can add is very helpful — particularly as the number of languages increases and people can search for companies by SIC and NAIC codes. Please add at least one to every page you create.
[edit] Adding codes to articles
We strongly encourage you to add a NAICS code to any entries that you create, as well as any other codes from the other systems that you can obtain.
Codes are added to articles using the "category" mechanism. Each industry code has a category, whose name is a combination of the code system and the code, separated by a colon.
Here are some examples:
- To add NAICS code 516110 to an article, append
[[Category:NAICS:516110]]to the end of the article. (See Category:NAICS:516110 for all entries with this code.) - To add SIC code 7310 to an article, append
[[Category:SIC:7310]]to the end of the article. (See Category:SIC:7310 for all entries with this code.) - To add ISIC code 7430 to an article, append
[[Category:ISIC:7430]]to the end of the article. (See Category:ISIC:7430 for all entries with this code.)
[edit] How to find codes
To look up the appropriate NAICS code number can be, do a keyword search on the NAICS website: http://naics.com/search.htm.
To find United Nations ISIC numbers use its registry here. It isn't quite as user friendly as the NAICS site, unfortunately.
